The Finished Image

Three days. Eight images. One finished portfolio.

An editing, curation and print retreat at The Gallery Broken Hill.

Over the course of a year, we capture thousands of photographs. We edit and share a few, while many others remain unfinished or overlooked on our hard drives.

The Finished Image is an intimate three-day retreat designed to give you the time, guidance and creative space to properly reflect on your photography from the previous year and beyond

Together, we will identify the images that matter, refine them with intention and create a cohesive eight-image portfolio that represents your photographic year.

This is not simply another editing or software class. It is a guided process of reflection, selection, editing and printmaking, helping you better understand your own work and take eight photographs all the way from capture to completion.

With a maximum of six participants, you will receive substantial individual guidance throughout the experience. You will leave Broken Hill with eight finished A3 fine-art prints, presented as a personal archival portfolio, along with a repeatable process you can use to develop future bodies of work.

Retreat Highlights

Pre-Retreat Portfolio Consultation: Before travelling to Broken Hill, you will join me for a private 45-minute Zoom consultation. Together, we will review your photography, identify your goals and begin developing the direction for your annual portfolio.

A Personalised Experience: This retreat is built around your photography. You will arrive with a Personal Portfolio Plan based on your submitted images, creative goals and the areas you want to develop.

Thoughtful Curation: Learn how to move beyond simply choosing your favourite photographs. We will look for the images that best represent your year, your growth and the subjects or ideas that continued to draw your attention.

Three Focused Days: Each day follows a clear stage of the process. Day One is dedicated to reflection and curation, Day Two to editing and refinement, and Day Three to proofing, printing and presenting the finished portfolio.

Bespoke Portfolio Tools: You will receive a purpose-built toolkit to help you evaluate, select, edit and print your photographs. These tools are designed to remain useful long after the retreat has finished.

Individual Editing Guidance: With only six participants, there will be plenty of opportunity for personalised help with your images, editing decisions and portfolio direction.

Professional Fine-Art Printing: Learn how your photographs translate from screen to paper. You will work through paper selection, soft proofing, test printing and print evaluation before producing your final portfolio.

A Finished Eight-Image Portfolio: Leave with eight A3 fine-art prints, professionally presented in an archival portfolio box with a title page, portfolio statement and print information.

Community and Conversation: Work alongside a small group of photographers in a relaxed and supportive environment where ideas can be shared openly, and everyone’s work is treated with respect.

What you'll learn

How to Reflect on Your Photographic Journey: Take a considered look at the places, subjects, experiences, and ideas that shaped your photography over the past twelve months.

How to Recognise Your Strongest Work: Develop a more objective way of evaluating your photographs, separating personal memories, technical success and genuine visual strength.

How to Build a Portfolio: Understand the difference between eight strong individual images and eight photographs that form a considered body of work.

How to Select with Purpose: Learn how every photograph can earn its position within the portfolio and contribute something the other seven images cannot.

How to Find Connections Within Your Work: Identify recurring subjects, colours, moods, compositions and ideas that may already be forming part of your photographic voice.

How to Sequence Photographs: Explore how the order of your images can create rhythm, contrast, connection and a more meaningful viewing experience.

How to Edit with Intention: Define what you want an image to communicate before making adjustments, then use tone, colour, contrast and local editing to support that intention.

How to Create Cohesion Without Sameness: Develop consistency across eight images while allowing photographs made in different places and conditions to retain their individuality.

How to Recognise When an Image Is Finished: Build a structured review process that helps you identify what is working, what remains unresolved and when it is time to stop editing.

How to Prepare Images for Print: Learn about colour management, soft proofing, sizing, output sharpening, paper selection and the differences between viewing an image on a screen and holding it in your hands.

How to Evaluate a Physical Print: Use controlled lighting and a practical print review process to assess brightness, colour, shadow detail, highlight detail, texture and emotional impact.

How to Carry the Process Forward: Leave with a repeatable method for reviewing your photography, building future collections and creating an annual record of your development.

The Experience?

Day One: Reflect and Curate

We begin by looking back across your photographic journey.

You will explore the experiences, subjects and ideas that shaped your work, then refine your initial shortlist into eight photographs that feel meaningful and representative.

Using small proof prints and the bespoke Portfolio Builder tools, we will examine how the images relate to one another, remove repetition, identify missing connections and develop an initial sequence.

By the end of Day One, you will have:

  • A working portfolio title

  • A clear central idea

  • Three words that guide the portfolio

  • Eight selected photographs

  • Two reserve images

  • An initial sequence

  • An editing plan for each image

Day Two: Edit and Refine

Day Two is dedicated to developing the eight selected photographs.

Rather than editing each image in isolation, you will learn to consider what the individual photograph needs and what the wider portfolio needs from it.

We will work through colour, tone, contrast, visual hierarchy, local adjustments and consistency across the collection. Your images will be reviewed individually, together as a portfolio and on the gallery’s large display.

By the end of Day Two, you will have:

  • Eight substantially completed images

  • A defined visual language

  • Greater consistency across colour and tone

  • A refined portfolio sequence

  • Final adjustment notes

  • Eight images ready for proof printing

Day Three: Proof, Print and Complete

On the final day, we take the portfolio beyond the screen.

You will learn how to prepare your photographs for print, choose a suitable fine-art paper and produce an initial proof set. We will evaluate the eight prints both individually and as a complete portfolio before making the final refinements.

You will then produce your finished A3 prints and assemble them into your personalised archival portfolio.

The retreat concludes with each participant presenting their finished work and reflecting on what they have learned about their photography.

By the end of Day Three, you will leave with:

  • Eight finished A3 fine-art prints

  • A personalised archival portfolio

  • A portfolio title and short written statement

  • A final sequence and contents page

  • A record of your print and paper choices

  • A clearer understanding of your photographic voice

  • A creative direction for the year ahead

Your Personal Portfolio Toolkit

Every participant will receive a bespoke set of tools developed specifically for The Finished Image.

Your toolkit will include:

  • Reflection and planning documents to guide your portfolio creation

  • Curation and selection tools to help you identify and refine your strongest images

  • Editing and sequencing guides to support intentional development of your portfolio

  • Print preparation and evaluation tools to bridge screen and final print output

  • A personalised archival portfolio box to protect and present your finished eight-image collection and work throughout the workshop.

These are not generic documents. They are practical tools designed to help you make more confident creative decisions during the retreat and continue building meaningful portfolios at home.

Who is this workshop for?

  • Photographers with Unfinished Images: If you have thousands of photographs sitting on hard drives but rarely give yourself the time to finish or print them, this retreat provides the structure and space to do exactly that.

  • Photographers Who Struggle to Select Their Best Work: If choosing between similar images feels overwhelming, you will develop a more considered and objective selection process.

  • Photographers Wanting More Direction: If your editing feels reactive, inconsistent or dependent on presets, the retreat will help you build a more intentional approach based on what you want each image to communicate.

  • Photographers Exploring Their Style: Reviewing a full year of work can reveal recurring themes and visual preferences that are difficult to recognise while creating individual images.

  • Photographers Interested in Printing: If you want to better understand how images translate from screen to paper, you will experience the entire process from soft proofing through to the finished fine-art print.

  • Photographers at Different Experience Levels: You do not need to be an advanced editor, but you should have a basic working knowledge of Lightroom, Adobe Camera Raw or Photoshop and be comfortable making simple adjustments to your photographs.

Not just another Editing Class

The Finished Image is not built around sliders, presets or a single software workflow.

It is about understanding why photographs matter, recognising connections within your work and learning how selection, editing, sequencing and printing contribute to a completed body of work.

What are my clients saying?

"I very much appreciated the time Adam spent with each individual in our small group."

"In addition to sharing his passion for photography and wealth of photographic knowledge and experience in a relaxed, low-key, but very professional way, Adam also made sure that all the accommodation and administrative details of our trip were taken care of seamlessly."

Community over competition

"In the photography world, success doesn't come from competing with others but building community. When we support and inspire each other, we create a space where creativity can thrive. By embracing collaboration over competition, we open doors to new ideas and endless possibilities." - Adam Edwards
