Lightroom Bootcamp
From catalogue chaos to confident editing
A three-day Lightroom editing and workflow retreat at The Gallery Broken Hill

Lightroom should make your photography easier, but for many photographers it becomes a source of confusion. Images disappear into complicated catalogues, folders become difficult to manage and editing turns into moving sliders without a clear plan.

Lightroom Bootcamp is an intensive three-day retreat designed to help you take control of your photography from the moment you import an image through to the final edit, export and backup.

Together, we will build a complete and repeatable Lightroom workflow. You will learn how to organise your photographs, make confident selections, understand the Develop tools, use masks with intention and finish your images for print or online use.

This is not about memorising every feature inside Lightroom. It is about understanding the tools that genuinely matter and creating a workflow that makes sense for your photography.

With a maximum of six participants, you will receive substantial individual guidance throughout the retreat. You will leave Broken Hill with a personalised Lightroom Playbook, an organised working catalogue, practical presets, a documented backup plan and the confidence to move from RAW capture to finished photograph.

Retreat Highlights
Pre-Retreat Workflow Review: Before travelling to Broken Hill, you will join me for a private 30-minute Zoom consultation. Together, we will review your current Lightroom setup, identify your biggest challenges and develop a plan for the retreat.

A Personalised Experience: This retreat is built around the way you photograph and edit. Your Workflow Plan will identify the areas you most need to develop and any technical preparation required before you arrive.

Three Focused Days: Each day follows a clear stage of the Lightroom process. Day One is dedicated to organisation and selection, Day Two to editing and colour, and Day Three to masking, finishing, export and backup.

Practical, Hands-On Learning: You will work alongside each demonstration using supplied RAW files before applying the techniques to your own photography.

Individual Editing Guidance: With only six participants, there will be plenty of time for individual help with your catalogue, workflow and photographs.

Bespoke Editing Tools: You will receive a purpose-built toolkit to help you manage your files, plan your edits, evaluate finished images and build a workflow you can confidently repeat at home.

Real-World Editing Demonstrations: Follow complete edits from the original RAW file through to the finished photograph, with clear explanations of what is being changed and why.

Your Personal Lightroom Playbook: Throughout the retreat, you will document your preferred folder structure, selection system, editing workflow, export settings and backup plan.

A Finished Fine-Art Print: On the final day, your strongest retreat edit will be professionally printed as an A3 fine-art print, giving you the opportunity to see how your editing decisions translate from screen to paper.

Community and Conversation: Learn alongside a small group of photographers in a relaxed, supportive environment where questions are encouraged, and everyone can progress at their own pace.

What you'll learn
How Lightroom Classic Works: Understand the relationship between your catalogue, original image files, previews and edits, and finally make sense of where Lightroom stores everything.

How to Build a Reliable Folder Structure: Create a clear and practical structure that makes your photographs easier to manage and locate.

How to Import Photographs Properly: Learn how to choose the correct destination, rename files, add copyright information, apply metadata and verify an import before formatting a memory card.

How to Organise and Find Your Images: Use flags, ratings, colour labels, keywords, filters, collections and Smart Collections to make sense of a growing image library.

How to Cull with Confidence: Develop a repeatable selection process that helps you compare similar photographs, identify stronger images and avoid becoming overwhelmed by large shoots.

How to Read the Histogram: Understand what the histogram is communicating and how it can help you make better exposure and tonal decisions.

How to Build a Strong Foundation: Work through profiles, white balance, exposure, highlights, shadows, whites, blacks, contrast and the Tone Curve in a logical order.

How to Control Colour: Explore the Colour Mixer, Point Colour, Colour Grading and Calibration tools to create intentional and believable colour.

How to Use Masks Effectively: Build and combine subject, sky, object, brush, gradient, luminance and colour range masks to guide attention and refine specific areas.

How to Avoid Overediting: Recognise when clarity, dehaze, saturation, sharpening, noise reduction or local adjustments have been pushed too far.

How to Edit with Purpose: Decide what a photograph needs before adjusting it, then use Lightroom’s tools to support the subject, atmosphere and visual hierarchy.

How to Finish an Image: Build a structured review process that helps you identify distractions, compare versions and recognise when an image is ready to leave Lightroom.

How to Export Correctly: Create reliable export settings for fine-art printing, websites, social media, email and client delivery.

How to Protect Your Work: Understand catalogue backups, image backups, synchronisation and the practical steps required to protect your photographs and edits.

Who is this workshop for?
-
Photographers Feeling Overwhelmed by Lightroom: If Lightroom feels confusing or unnecessarily complicated, this retreat will help you understand how its core systems fit together.
-
Photographers with Catalogue Chaos: If your images are spread across folders, drives or multiple catalogues, you will learn how to build a safer and more organised approach moving forward.
-
Photographers Who Edit by Guesswork: If you move sliders until an image looks better but struggle to explain why, you will develop a more deliberate and repeatable editing process.
-
Photographers Wanting to Understand Masking: If Lightroom’s newer masking tools feel overwhelming, you will learn how to select, combine and refine masks through practical examples.
-
Photographers Who Rely on Presets: Presets can be useful, but they should not replace understanding. This retreat will help you recognise what a photograph needs and make the adjustments yourself.
-
Photographers Concerned About Losing Their Work: If you are unsure whether your photographs, catalogue and edits are properly backed up, you will leave with a practical protection plan.
-
Photographers Preparing for The Finished Image: Lightroom Bootcamp provides an ideal technical foundation for photographers who want to attend The Finished Image annual portfolio retreat.
-
Photographers at Different Experience Levels: You do not need to be an advanced editor. The retreat is suitable for newer Lightroom users and more experienced photographers who have developed gaps or inconsistencies in their workflow.

This retreat focuses specifically on Adobe Lightroom Classic. Participants will need a laptop with a current version of Lightroom Classic installed.

Why choose this workshop?

Personalised Experience
Your experience begins before you arrive in Broken Hill.

Through the pre-retreat questionnaire and private Workflow Review, I will take the time to understand your current setup, the problems you are experiencing and what you most want to achieve.

Meaningful Outcomes
The goal is not simply to complete three days of Lightroom lessons.

You will leave with a practical system for importing, organising, selecting, editing, exporting and protecting your photographs. Your Personal Lightroom Playbook will document the decisions, settings and processes you develop during the retreat.

Not just another Editing Class
Lightroom makes more sense when you can see how its tools respond to real photographic challenges.

Throughout the retreat, I will demonstrate complete edits and explain not only what I am adjusting, but why I am making each decision. You will work on supplied RAW files and your own photographs, with direct feedback and guidance.

Community over competition
"In the photography world, success doesn't come from competing with others but building community. When we support and inspire each other, we create a space where creativity can thrive. By embracing collaboration over competition, we open doors to new ideas and endless possibilities." - Adam Edwards
