Mastering Your Flying Camera
Learn your drone, build confidence, and capture better photos and videos from above

The Art of Flying Cameras is a four-night workshop designed to help you become more familiar with your drone and more confident using it for both photography and video. This is not a certified drone training course. Instead, it is a practical and creative experience built for people who want to better understand their drone, improve their skills, and start creating stronger work from above.

Based in Broken Hill, this workshop blends classroom learning with time in the field, giving you the chance to learn in a relaxed and supportive environment before putting those skills into practice. We will focus on building confidence step by step, helping you better understand how your drone works, how aerial image-making differs from shooting on the ground, and how to use your drone with greater purpose and creativity.

What this workshop is about

This workshop is all about helping you go beyond simply flying your drone. We will look at how to use it as a creative tool, exploring the way drones see the landscape, how to work with light and movement, and how to approach both stills and video with more intention.

Whether you are just getting started or feel you have only scratched the surface, this workshop is designed to deepen your understanding in a way that feels approachable and enjoyable.

Broken Hill and the surrounding outback offer the perfect setting for this kind of learning. With wide-open spaces, striking colour, big skies, and unique landscape features, you will have plenty of opportunities to practise and start to see the creative potential of drone photography and video in a whole new way.

Who is this workshop for?

This workshop is ideal for photographers, content creators, and drone owners who want to build real confidence with their drone and create better work from the air. It is suited to people who want more than just the basics of flight and are looking to better understand camera settings, composition, creative possibilities, and how to get the most from their equipment in the field.

The workshop will focus on DJI drones, as they remain the most common platform and offer a strong foundation for both photography and video. With over 200 hours of flight time on DJI drones, I’ll be sharing practical insights gained through real experience in the field, helping you better understand both the creative and operational sides of working from the air.

How the Workshop Runs

This is a four-night experience that moves between classroom sessions and field-based learning. The idea is to build your understanding gradually, then put it into practice in a way that feels hands-on and achievable. Rather than rushing through technical information, we will take the time to help you understand what your drone is doing, why it matters, and how to use that knowledge to improve your work.

The field sessions are an important part of the experience, giving you the chance to apply what you have learned in a real landscape with guidance and support along the way. This steady, practical approach is designed to help you leave feeling more comfortable, more capable, and far more inspired to use your drone.

A Note about the workshop

The Art of Flying Cameras is not a certified drone licence or accreditation course. It is a creative workshop focused on helping you better understand your drone and use it more effectively for photography and video. If your goal is to become more confident, more informed, and more creative with your drone, this workshop will give you a strong foundation to build on.

Why Broken Hill?

Broken Hill is an incredible place to learn drone photography and video. The landscapes are vast, varied, and visually rich, offering everything from rugged textures and winding roads to big skies and striking light. Just as importantly, it gives us the ability to start in easy, low-stress locations where you can get comfortable with your drone, build your confidence, and focus on the fundamentals without feeling overwhelmed. As the workshop progresses and your confidence grows, we can build on that foundation and begin working in more varied and creative environments.

Broken Hill is also home to my gallery, which provides us with access to a fully equipped learning space for classroom sessions. This means we can comfortably move between practical field work and more focused indoor learning, giving you the best of both worlds. You will have the chance to learn, ask questions, review your work, and deepen your understanding in a space purpose-built for creativity and education.
